a glimpse into history of Den Bosch

Founded in 1185, 's-Hertogenbosch offers a well-preserved medieval centre with small streets and plenty of historic buildings. The iconic St. Jan's Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece finished in 1340, is a city symbol.

The name of the city, meaning "The Duke’s Forest", which illustrates its origins as a hunting ground for the Dukes of Brabant.

Landmarks such as the old city hall, the city walls or the Moriaan and museums like the Noordbrabants Museum highlight the region’s rich heritage.

Bossche bol or worstenbroodje: discover the local specialties

Den Bosch is famous for its Bossche Bol, a chocolate-coated pastry filled with whipped cream, found in almost all cafés across the city and usually enjoyed with a cup of coffee.

It is also always a good time for a worstenbroodje (soft bread snack filled with a sausage - vegetarian options available).

All around the city centre offers restaurants serving both local and international dishes.

Hieronymus Bosch, museums and festivals

The city is the birthplace of painter Hieronymus Bosch (who died in 1516) and celebrates his legacy at the Hieronymus Bosch Art Centre, in his family house on the Markt and on several wall painting or sculptures across the city.

Beyond Bosch, concert halls, theatres, and events like the Jazz Music Festival (Jazz in Duketown) and the Theatre Festival Boulevard are perfect examples of the city’s vibrant cultural scene.

waterways and nature

A unique feature of the centre is the Binnendieze, a network of waterways flowing through - and mostly - beneath the city. Guided boat tours (from spring to fall) provide a serene way to explore the city’s hidden waterways and architecture.

Just south of the city centre, the Bossche Broek a protected area allows a peaceful escape for a walk in nature and an exceptional view of the city. Definitely recommended on sunny days.
